Hello guys,
last night I just downloaded The Illuminated Order because everyone
was saying it's very good and professional. The main theme of the
mod seems to center around lich. What exactly is a lich and what
does it do? Though before I've played Warcraft 3 in which there's a
lich king, I never know what it is. Maybe it's time I find that out.
So, what is a lich?

A lich is a
mage that falls to the dark magics, submiting himself to dark magic
(kind of like the dark side of the force in Star Wars) to become
stronger.
They then proceed to get stronger and stronger,
absorbing all knowlege possible, to the point of acquiring
immortality and controlling magic like a second skin.
Liches
are loners, since most people dont really feel good at staying near
demonic undead with no mercy.
They eventually get strong
enough to level entire cities and armies.
They are basically
really really strong, and Immortal, mages.

lich picture cause a picture is worth a thousand
words ,
this particular picture seams to be a clan gathering or perhaps the
lich may have converted himself and several apprentecises to act as
bodyguards or as the main lich themself, then if the town catches
the apprentice (not likely) and kills/ puts it out of action (VERY
unlikely) then the main lich can work his unseen magic and slowly
destroy the town/ city

Unlike most
undead which are created by other undead or by the desires of a
Necromatic spellcaster trying to create servants, the lich is
basically an undead entity that was self created.
A magician
that wishes to 'live forever' takes steps so that when they pass on
from the realm of the living, their essence will continue to go on
in the form of a horrid creature.
Liches are extremely
frightening because they keep the abilities they had in death, which
means most of them are very powerful spellcasters. Also, unlike your
more common garden variety of undead, liches rate as high as
geniuses for intelligence, making them a more formidable
opponent.
It is rumored that anyone killed by a lich becomes
their servant in the afterlife, a rumor that has yet to be proven. I
mean, how many skeletons do you stand around and chit chat
with?

Ahh, the

I thought
"Undead Evil Mage of quite bowel emptying scariness" summed it up
quite nicely.

Simple, accurate and
effective. Yup -quite nicely.
I've heard it pronounced LICK,

I like the ones that are just

The floating skulls are called
Lichni. They are kinda like magical vampire Liches. Instead of
sucking blood, they suck magic. Muahahahahahaha. . . . I mean

The floating
skulls are demi-liches. They are probably the most powerful non-god
creature in D&D. They have moved beyond good and evil,
ultimately leaving the material plane to quest for greater
knowledge.

Of all the
Ad&d versions of ravenloft monsters, I think the lich is the
most fantasy based one; the other archetypes (vampires, ghosts &
even golems) have deeply established mainstream image. I mean, most
of their distintitve features (undead magician, Phlactery,
psychological outlook) have been developed over the course of the
evolution of AD&D. I personaly feel that the real lich
experience has never been properly done in CRPG....you would have to
plan in advance many details that would make the experience
excedingly tough to play through, since they are supposed to be
ultra smart, and have decades to execute their plans & to buff
up their lairs & servants. It´s my favorite undead; a
creature that wills itself to live forever, to attain all the
possible knowledge it can from this plane, and then go on to study
the realms of the gods themselves....I suddenly feel the nostalgic
urge to go through my Van Richten Guide to Liches...login out

I was actually
able to defeat the demi-liche in Baldur's Gate 2 without losing a
single party member. Even the game guides had said it was
impossible, and I owe it all to summoned monsters and Lilacor.

That´s exactly
my point...going up a door, opening it a fighting a demi lich out of
nowhere....where´s the buildup? I mean, that little skull could have
been morte having a bad tanturum affter waking up. The real lich
experience is more along the lines of the Iluminated
order...searching for the lich without knowing what your getting
into...lookig for clues, facing his minions, and relasing that maybe
you are dealing with something more than you can handle...not
opening a damn crypt and finding a magic bag of bones spoling for a
fight for not even a faint "my name is the Screaming Skull, and I´m
a lich"

all you really
need to know about liches, in my belief they are just powerfull
necromancers who have attained an ultimate power, and upon
sacrificing themselves unto oblivion if deemed worthy they are
granted immortality, along with powers that far exceed what they
could ever have dreamed to recieve in their mortal existance.
......damn that makes me wish i was a liche...

I find that rather strange
since your own little dictionary excerpt didn't have that
pronounciation anywhere and neither does any other dictionaries I
have tried. So I will say it with the "ch" like in "cheese"...

You're right.
I took a look at that was a Chaucer spelling of the word which is
now "like". Lich is indeed pronounced with a "ch" sound".
Now
please, STOP BUMPING THIS TOPIC.
